When working with variegated/multi-color yarns, you may want to blend in complementing/coordinating solid colors. Sometimes it’s not that easy trying to find such coordinating colors like for my current project that I am working on with the Red Heart Shaded Dusk colorway. I did a search this morning for an aid that would help with finding some coordinating colors and found this helpful chart that helps with solid color coordination with the Red Heart variegated yarns.
Notes:
• Size H/5.00 mm hook (or any size you choose)
• Ch 3 counts as a dc
• Sm cluster = 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc
Ch 4 and sl st in first ch to make a loop
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc into loop, ch 2; *(3 dc, ch 2). Rpt from * twice and sl st into top of ch 3. Sl st to ch-2 corner sp.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ch-2 corner sp.; *(dc in next 3 dc, sm cluster in ch-2 corner sp). Rpt from * twice. Dc in next 3 dc and sl st into top of ch 3. Sl st to ch-2 corner sp.

We all have our preferred methods of crocheting from patterns whether it be by written pattern, graphs, videos or a combination of any of these. Sometimes, the pattern we want to use is only available in video format such as those found on YouTube and if the video version of a pattern is the only format that it is available in, then for those who prefer a written version are often out of luck.
However, there is hope! If a pattern is only available via video, do what I do. Watch the video and take your own notes. That way you have a personal working copy of the pattern in terms and words that you can understand even if you don’t use the standard crochet terms and abbreviations. For those parts that may go to fast for you, just rewind to the section and listen/watch again to make sure you haven’t missed anything. You can then watch the video from start to finish and compare your notes with it to make sure you have not left anything out.
A couple words of caution when taking notes to create your personal working copy:

The Alma’s Square is a variation on the Grannies Square. The solid and traditional granny stiches alternate sides of the square with the with a pattern of solid, traditional, solid, and traditional. The square can be made as small or as large as desired due to repeating rounds.
Notes:
· Size H/5.00 mm hook**
· Ch 3 counts as a dc
· Shell = 3 dc and ch 1
